Drug abuse among students in Malaysia is becoming an increasingly urgent issue. According to the Agensi Antidadah Kebangsaan (AADK), 120 students in Sarawak have tested positive for drugs in just the first few months of 2024 — a sharp rise from 106 cases recorded throughout all of last year.
This surge, based on urine screening conducted during anti-drug awareness campaigns, highlights the need for more consistent, proactive action. AADK has identified areas like Gita, Samariang, and Sri Aman as communities requiring extra vigilance, with hopes of maintaining their “white area” (drug-free) status.
Why schools must act early
Schools play a pivotal role in shaping young people’s futures — not just academically, but socially and emotionally. When drug use enters the picture, it disrupts more than just learning: it impacts mental health, behaviour, and long-term wellbeing.
Assistant Minister for Rural Economy (Interior Areas) and Plantation, Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, recently emphasised the importance of frequent drug awareness campaigns in schools, especially in secondary institutions. His call to action encourages educators to take the lead in keeping schools safe and free from substance misuse.
Early intervention starts with awareness and screening
Awareness campaigns are powerful — but awareness alone isn’t enough. Early detection is critical for helping at-risk students before the problem escalates. That’s where drug screening in schools becomes an important step forward.
Routine or targeted drug testing, especially among students showing signs of substance use, can provide a non-invasive and responsible way to identify those who may need support. Schools that combine education and detection are better equipped to offer timely intervention, counselling, and care.
Tools schools can use: Drug test kits that support education, not punishment
At Andatech Malaysia, we believe in providing accurate, accessible, and non-stigmatising tools that help institutions uphold a safe learning environment. Our recommended test kits for school use include:
- ✅ SureStep EZ Split Cup – A user-friendly, all-in-one urine drug test that detects up to 10 substances in a single test.
- ✅ ProDetect 5-in-1 Dipcard – A compact, affordable testing solution with clear and fast results, ideal for on-the-spot school screenings.
These kits are designed to make drug testing simple and efficient, supporting educators to focus on helping, not punishing, students. With results available within minutes, schools can take swift, informed action.
How schools and communities can work together
Preventing drug abuse is not a task for schools alone. Parents, community leaders, and local authorities must play their part in creating drug-free zones across Malaysia. Programs like AADK’s Tempat Kerja Bebas Dadah (TEKAD) and watchlists such as Orang Kena Pengawasan (OKP) demonstrate how proactive monitoring and partnerships can lead to safer communities.
The rise in student drug use is a wake-up call — and action starts with schools. By combining awareness campaigns with practical tools like drug test kits, we can empower educators to identify at-risk students early and offer the support they need.
Let’s work together to ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn and grow in a safe, drug-free environment.
