Can workplace drug testing help fight Kelantan’s drug crisis?

Kelantan continues to battle one of the highest drug addiction rates in Malaysia. But could frequent workplace drug testing, combined with a culture of compassion and support, be part of the solution?

Drug addiction in Kelantan: A growing concern

As of March 2025, Kelantan recorded 11,280 drug addicts and abusers, placing it among the top three states in Malaysia for drug-related cases. According to the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), that’s 597 cases per 100,000 people — just behind Terengganu and Perlis.

While authorities have noted a 5.4% decline from the previous year, the numbers remain troubling. Amphetamine-Type Stimulants (ATS) accounted for a staggering 89.3% of cases, followed by opiates, psychotropic pills, and cannabis. With Kelantan consistently appearing at the top of national drug statistics, it’s clear that more targeted intervention is needed.

The workplace: A frontline for early intervention

Drug use doesn’t end when someone clocks in for work. In fact, many affected individuals are actively employed. This presents a real risk for workplace safety, especially in industries like construction, transport, and manufacturing where impairment can endanger lives.

Workplaces that introduce drug and alcohol testing protocols not only protect their teams — they also create opportunities for early detection and support. Testing can identify issues before they escalate and offer employees a path toward rehabilitation instead of punishment.

Why frequent testing matters

One-off or pre-employment testing isn’t enough. To be truly effective, testing must be frequent, random, and supported by clear policy.

Regular drug and alcohol screening:

  • Deters misuse
  • Identifies repeat or escalating behaviour
  • Demonstrates the employer’s commitment to safety and well-being

Andatech offers a range of solutions for frequent testing, including rapid drug test kits, handheld breathalysers, and wall-mounted testing units suitable for high-traffic sites.

Testing with compassion

Frequent testing isn’t about catching people out — it’s about protecting them. To make a lasting impact, testing must be paired with a culture of compassion.

Employers should:

  • Offer clear support pathways for those who test positive
  • Provide access to rehabilitation and counselling services
  • Avoid immediate dismissal unless safety is at risk

Creating an environment where employees feel safe to seek help is critical. When addiction is treated as a health issue instead of a moral failing, real progress can begin.

Changing workplace culture in Kelantan

In a state where drug use has long been stigmatised, employers can lead the way in shifting perceptions. By normalising testing and promoting support over shame, businesses can:

  • Reduce the risk of incidents
  • Improve employee retention and trust
  • Contribute to the broader fight against substance abuse

Workplace policies should aim to protect, not punish. With the right tools and attitude, employers can help create a Kelantan where fewer lives are lost to addiction.

A shared responsibility

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi recently called for stronger intervention and shared responsibility in tackling Kelantan’s drug crisis. While enforcement and border control efforts play a role, employers also have a duty to act.

Workplace drug testing — when done right — can form a powerful part of the solution. It not only keeps workplaces safe, but also gives individuals a chance to seek help and rebuild.
